With the Senior External Examination system replacing the QCS Test, it's important that we begin preparing students with the skills they need to succeed under this new type of assessment. That’s why we’re starting early, with a range of Cognitive Verb lessons available for download on the Mighty Minds Portal. The Cognitive Verbs, which will replace the Common Curriculum Elements (CCEs), are the key skills that students will be expected to use across a range of senior subjects. They are vitally important, as they provide the foundation for the entire Queensland Senior School Curriculum.Examples of Cognitive Verbs include analyse, discuss and explain.
Since Cognitive Verbs are used as directives in the Senior Examinations, all students will encounter them – regardless of their subject choices. Consequently, an increased understanding of the Cognitive Verbs will directly correlate with an increase in student level of achievement.
The current junior secondary students will be among the first cohorts in Queensland to complete external exams, which is why we have developed lessons specifically for helping students understand the new curriculum. These lessons last for approximately 60 minutes and introduce students to one particular CV, then provide them with the opportunity to practise it through a range of questions across different subject areas. Mighty Minds has developed a unique teaching method that measures each student’s level of understanding for the Cognitive Verb.
Every lesson includes a marking scheme and multiple examples that identify the level of their understanding. This creative teaching tool allows students to identify the components necessary to fully understand each verb and its context within different subjects. Altogether, these lessons allow students to increase their expertise in the Cognitive Verbs and hence improve their level of achievement.
Included with every lesson is a poster that can be displayed throughout your school to inspire student understanding for each Cognitive Verb. Each poster consists of a student-friendly definition of the Cognitive Verb, a marking scheme to track student proficiency with the verb, examples of real world applications and steps on how best to approach a question containing that verb.
The Cognitive Verbs should be introduced as early as possible and integrated into all classwork and assessment pieces. To help your school get started with this, we've created a work plan that outlines how students can cover all 75 Cognitive Verbs during Years 7-9, ensuring students are well prepared to succeed in their senior years.VIEW SAMPLE LESSON
