Unit 3 Workshop 1

6-hour workshop covering the first half of Unit 3

Associations between categorical variables
  • bivariate data, two-way frequency tables and association
  • scatterplots and strength of association
  • linear model by method of least squares
  • residual plots and coefficient of determination (R2)
  • make predictions by interpolation and extrapolation
  • association and causation, coincidence and confounding
Time series
  • features of time series plots such as long-term trend, seasonality, short term irregular fluctuations and outliers
  • smoothing data and seasonal indices
  • modelling long term trends with least-squares line

Calculus of logarithmic functions

  • extending concepts from Unit 1 into three dimensions by introducing the unit vector \(\hat k\) and the altitude \(\varphi \)
Vector and Cartesian equations
  • vector, parametric and Cartesian equations of straight lines, curves and spheres
  • cross product
  • equations of planes
  • areas of shapes including triangles and parallelograms
Vector Calculus
  • Cartesian equations of particles in motion where the path is a circle, ellipse or hyperbola
  • differentiating and integrating vector functions with respect to time
  • solve projectile and circular motion problems

  • resolve vectors into perpendicular components
  • solve problems using vector components
Projectile motion
  • resolve velocity into horizontal and vertical components
  • solve a variety of problems involving projectile motion
Inclined planes
  • draw free body diagrams involving weight \(\left( {W = mg} \right)\), normal force, friction\(\left( {{F_f} = \mu {F_N}} \right)\)
  • calculate the net force
  • solve a variety of problems involving inclined planes using \({F_f} = \mu {F_N}\) and \(F = mg\)
Uniform circular motion
  • features of uniform circular motion in terms of a force \(\left( {{F_{net}} = \frac{{m{v^2}}}{r}} \right)\), acceleration\(\left( {{a_C} = \frac{{{v^2}}}{r}} \right)\), velocity\(\left( {v = \frac{{2\pi r}}{T}} \right)\), average speed and period
  • solve a variety of problems uniform circular motion
Gravitational force and fields
  • Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation\(\left( {F = \frac{{GMm}}{{{r^2}}}} \right)\), and gravitational field strength \(\left( {g = \frac{F}{m} = \frac{{GM}}{{{r^2}}}} \right)\)
  • solve a variety of problems involving gravitational and gravitational field strength.
Orbits
  • Kepler’s laws of planetary motion
  • the relationship between Kepler’s third law, Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation and uniform circular motion \(\left( {\frac{{{T^2}}}{{{r^3}}} = \frac{{4{\pi ^2}}}{{GM}}} \right)\)
  • solve problems involving Kepler’s third law
